Prize Winner: Undergraduate Awards

Recent graduate, Sebastian Despuig Reid was among 19 University of Sheffield students to be "Highly Commended" by the Undergraduate Awards for his undergraduate research dissertation conducted with the Geotechnical Engineering Group.

The Undergraduate Awards received 6472 submissions across all categories, with the top 10% being awarded Highly Commended status, judged though a rigorous process to note the best, most innovative, and creative undergraduate coursework.

Sebastian's dissertation titled "Rough monopiles for offshore wind energy applications" concluded that rough piles delivered a greater lateral stiffness compared to their smooth counterparts as found during small scale physical modelling.  This has the potential to reduce movement during lateral load cycling, improving the efficiency of monopile foundations used for wind turbines in areas such as the North Sea.
