Prize winners - YPG Poster Competition, New Zealand

Congratulations to Lauren Boyd and Liam Ross for taking second place in the New Zealand Geotechnical Society's annual YGP poster competition, held at the Auckland Branch meeting on Tuesday 16th May at the Tonkin and Taylor office.  Their prize winning poster was titled "Centrifuge Modelling Of Dam Core Deformation".

Lauren and Liam visited the University of Sheffield during their final year of undergraduate studies during a semester abroad from their studies at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand.  During their time in Sheffield they worked on the small teaching centrifuge within the Centre for Energy and Infrastructure Ground Research investigating the deformation mechanisms within clay core earth dams.  The work was jointly supervised by Dr Jennifer Haskell (University of Canterbury) and Dr Paul Shepley (University of Sheffield).

The results from physical modelling highlighted the presence of a strain localisation within the clay core during consolidation settlements as the dam aged.  This raises questions about the stability of the dam core during later events, notably during earthquakes.
